The pitch
Its full name is a mouthful — Canad Inns Destination Centre Club Regent Casino Hotel — and it adjoins Club Regent Casino, one of two Casinos of Winnipeg run by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries. 146 smoke-free rooms fill six storeys; a AAA inspector's verdict of "modest" is accurate. Types: Two Queen, One King, One Queen, One-Bedroom King Suite.
Playing and shows
Roughly 1,200 slot machines, including progressives and electronic table games, plus bingo; live tables run daily from 5:30 pm until 3 am. Manitoba's age is 18. The Club Regent Event Centre (opened 2014, 1,300 seats) books concerts and comedy, and Playmaker's Gaming Lounge in the hotel has VLTs from 9 am to midnight.
Eating
Dinner means Aaltos and its themed buffets — turkey, roast beef, surf and turf, ribs with chicken — Thursday through Sunday, 5 to 8 pm, with a brunch on Sundays between 10 am and 2 pm. Toukies is the lounge on the casino side, and a McDonald's and an ice-cream counter fill the gaps.
Logistics
Parking in the casino parkade costs nothing. The airport is about 15 km away, around 25 minutes. Per AAA: check-in 4 pm, check-out 11 am, no pets. Ask about the Stay & Play rate, which loads $15 of free play per Club Card member.
Our take
Good enough for an event-centre night or some Winnipeg gaming — but it's not a resort, and that keeps it just outside our top ten.
