Alberta's casino hotels, reviewed

Alberta's two big casino resorts share a lot: both are owned by First Nations, and each sits just outside one of the province's two largest cities — Grey Eagle on Tsuut'ina Nation land by Calgary, River Cree on Enoch Cree Nation land by Edmonton. Gaming here is regulated by AGLC and the casino age is 18.

River Cree Resort & Casino
Hockey, Ramsay and a big gaming floor — River Cree, just west of Edmonton on Enoch Cree Nation land, does all three. The hotel has 249 rooms for now; the resort adds twin NHL-size rinks, one of the largest casinos in Alberta and the very first Hell's Kitchen by Gordon Ramsay in Canada, with West Edmonton Mall a free shuttle ride away. An 18-storey tower is under way.
Grey Eagle Resort & Casino
Mountains on one side, the city on the other: Grey Eagle, run by the Tsuut'ina Nation at Calgary's south-west corner, has had a 178-room hotel since 2014, and on a clear day its west-facing windows frame the Rockies. Strong acts play its Event Centre (2,500 seats) and Little Chief ranks among the West's better casino kitchens. Downside: the pool stays shut through a renovation that runs into 2027.
