Grey Eagle Resort & Casino: our review

Last updated · facts verified

Mountains on one side, the city on the other: Grey Eagle, run by the Tsuut'ina Nation at Calgary's south-west corner, has had a 178-room hotel since 2014, and on a clear day its west-facing windows frame the Rockies. Strong acts play its Event Centre (2,500 seats) and Little Chief ranks among the West's better casino kitchens. Downside: the pool stays shut through a renovation that runs into 2027.

Ideal for: Calgary concert nights, with Kananaskis and Banff close enough for day trips.
Think twice if: The pool is a must — it's closed while renovations run.

The pitch

Grey Eagle belongs to, and is run by, the Tsuut'ina Nation. The casino dates from 2007; the six-storey hotel, with 178 rooms, had its grand opening on 2 May 2014. Downtown Calgary is a few minutes away and Kananaskis Country about thirty — a mix no other casino hotel here can claim.

Sleeping

West-facing rooms, says the resort, see the Rocky Mountains when the air is clear; the others overlook the city. Pick between Standard King, Premier King and Standard Two Queen — the last one recommended for families — or go up to the King Suite or Presidential Suite. The hotel describes all its rooms and suites as newly renovated.

Playing

84,000 sq ft, 975-plus slots, 32 tables. Slots operate 24 hours, tables 10 am–3 am, and there are high-limit rooms for blackjack, baccarat and others. Alberta's gaming age is 18. According to the casino, renovations continue in phases through 2026–2027. Loyalty runs through Winner's Edge, the province-wide card.

Event Centre

2,500 seats, open to all ages, re-equipped with an L-Acoustics sound system in 2024 and voted Venue/Presenter of the Year at the 2024 YYC Music Awards. The Concert Night Getaway — two tickets and an overnight stay — sells for $329 to $369.

Eating

Book Little Chief: it pairs Indigenous tradition with modern cooking, and both Avenue Magazine and the Calgary Herald have featured it. If you fancy the 18+ Buffet, go before 31 December 2026 — it runs nightly features until then and closes for renovation in January 2027. The Eagle Street Eats truck sells bannock, chili, Indian tacos and Saskatoon berry dumplings; the Stage Bar has free weekend shows; Eagle Bar sits on the gaming floor, and Blaze Bar & Grill rounds things out.

Unwinding

With the casino under renovation, the pool is closed; in its place, hotel guests get free admission to the City of Calgary's Killarney and Glenmore pools. Still open: outdoor hot tub, sauna and a 24-hour gym.

Beyond the casino

Grey Eagle Cultural Tours offer experiences on Tsuut'ina Nation such as the Tsuut'ina Museum and a Buffalo Paddock Tour. YYC is 30 to 45 minutes away, Banff around an hour. Parking is free, and there's a dedicated pet floor.

Our take

Our top pick for Calgary or a Rockies trip, and a strong concert base. Until the works finish, it's hot tub, not pool.

Before you book: common questions

Is the Grey Eagle pool open?

Not during the casino renovation. Hotel guests can use the City of Calgary's Killarney and Glenmore pools free of charge instead.

Will I see the Rockies from my room at Grey Eagle?

Possibly: the resort says some rooms face west and see the mountains on clear days. The rest face the city.

Is the Grey Eagle Event Centre all-ages?

Yes. The casino is 18+, but the Event Centre admits all ages.
